When reviewing music, for some reason I like to listen to the last track first. The last track on Lilly Lavner's album Walking Away, and the first I listened to was called "City Lights." At the very beginning of the track, I thought the song would be prefect to back a scene in an episode of My So-Called Life, even if the show took place in the suburbs rather than a city.
On most of the tracks, the introductory instrumentals are great and lead you to believe that you'll be listening to a good song, but when Lilly Lavner starts singing, it begins to take a turn for the worst. Don't get me wrong she has a nice voice, but it doesn't fit her alternative style music.
The clincher for me was the face that her lyrics lacked depth. Everything was very simple, and on the surface. Most of it was very predictable, with so-so rhymes that I feel would be more appropriate for pre-teens. There is an innocence in her music that is okay, but something is missing, and I think it's the passion for writing music as opposed to just vocal performance.
