JL Cotter: Demo - Music Review

By Christine Viscardi, HOT INDIE NEWS .com

Date Published: February 26, 2008

JL Cotter: Demo - Music Review Yet another product of the American Idol juggernaut, JL Cotter (then introduced as Jared Cotter) has emerged from a very awkward failing audition to start what could be a fruitful career as an R&B artist, starting off with this three-track demo.

His smooth toned voice shines on "Tell Him," something he probably would not have been able to tackle successfully on Idol because it's not "pop." However, this forum for his voice is a lot more inviting. His falsetto on the track is there, but it leads to wanting more from his talent.

The demo's strong track is "East Side" which also features a rapping Mos Def. It's much more upbeat than the other two and almost reminds one of Craig David's beats and melodies. Cotter's voice blends very well – it would not be surprising to hear this on the radio soon.

Lastly, "Make U Cry," featuring Stimuli, is the weakest of the three. Although it incorporates a variety of mixed sounds and vocals and is another smooth tune, it is nothing out of the ordinary and can really be only used as filler on a whole album. The rap seems a little out of place but it's not horrible overall.

If people can forget Cotter's quite "sexual" last audition on Idol and start over with his own sound, he has a promising R&B career ahead.
