Firefall: Colorado To Liverpool - Music Review

I wanted to review this CD because I love the Beatles and although every track is a Beatles song it should be able to stand on its own. This doesn't. Not even remotely. It's the old addage about a one legged man in an ass=kicking contest. Let's face it guys - when you decide to cover a legendary band like the Beatles you will need to be top of your game. I don't think you even made it to the field in this outing.
We have some of the most popular tunes represented here and some lesser known work that is, to be honest, lesser known for a reason. Such songs like "Eleanor Rigby", "Here Comes the Sun" and "Come Together" make a showing. Other works like "Norwegian Wood" and "You're Gonna Lose That Girl" also appear.
It's my personal belief that Firefall should have stuck to one decade of the Beatles instead of trying to represent the entirety of their music. they were able top nail "Eleanor Rigby" (ohhhhh... dirty innuendo there) and "Here Comes the Sun" by being true to the Beatles style. The music was great, vocals spot on and I loved it. I was tortured with "Within You, Without You" and sorry guys, but I nearly fell asleep. If you're suffering from Narcolepsy then this version will most certainly aid you in a cure. The vocals were very monotone in sound and reminded me of beatniks in a coffeehouse playing a lute and some bongos. They attempted some "rock" tones but kind of failed miserably with it. Indian influences abound here. I feel like I need a bellydancer and a bowl of curry.
We had a fair share of 50's throwbacks with "Girl" and "You're Gonna Lose That Girl". Both were ok and were what they were. "Girl" stood out due to the bands' use of Italian style music - like you went out to the Italian restaurant and a guy was walking around with an accordion serenading you THEN, without warning, switches to an odd Russian Polish medley or music. "You're Gonna Lose That Girl" was a deeply discounted version of a bad 50's song which went a step further to threaten, albeit sweetly, the stealing of a girlfriend. "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" takes the cake with its country music sound to it. I think I need to go out and buy a set of chaps and a cowboy hat.
If you love the Beatles - ignore the CD. If you've NEVER heard of the Beatles before then, by all means, pick this up. the worse thing you could use it for is a coaster, right? Musically sound and vocally good. Arrangements were lousy overall.. some things just don't need changing, ok? Good. 6.5 for a fine attempt.
