Richard D Shank: A Single Step - Music Review

By Tingyu Shen, HOT INDIE NEWS .com

Date Published: January 10, 2008

Richard D Shank: A Single Step - Music Review Shank's style, although personally described on the website as piano rock, is actually really close to that of Bruce Springsteen. He has a talent in writing lyrics, and it's not about love (finally!) but about life, they are thought provoking lyrics.

The album is not perfect, especially the slower songs, combined with his talk about life, make them sound preachy. These songs started to get on my nerve after about a minute and a half, but unfortunately, they are all over four minutes long.

At the beginning of the first song, Shank did a "1, 2, 3, 4!" as a tribute to the Ramones. And if you know anything about music, you know that the Ramones is among one of the fastest bands out there. Shank didn't play as fast as the first punk band did, but indeed with this album, the faster songs were better, they were more energetic, and were sung with more urgency and passion that give the songs their power. Not to mention the adept guitar and piano playing that fit perfectly with his Shank's style.
