Kelly And David: As The Twilight Auguries - Music Review

I originally called doing Kelly and David because I thought they were kinda like Rilo Kiley. I have no idea why I thought this, maybe I heard just a tiny snippet of 'Mouse' but even still, the Rilo Kiley comparison is still really reaching for it. I dunno, guys. I just don't know.
Kelly and David ARE like Rilo Kiley in that they have a guy and a girl sharing the vocals but other than that not, really. They lean more towards the ethereal indie rock quality that Blake Sennett brought to the band and less of the slightly rock turn that later Rilo Kiley has been slipping down into.
I wasn't completely let down that they don't sound like Rilo Kiley because I was surprised that their music actually is still good. It's got a haunting quality to all the songs, with their accoustic guitar and vocals combination. The instruments used are very minimalistic, very simple but still good. This could be what your pretentious sister who goes to art school (or Vassar) plays in her art-rock band.
I could be biased though, they do feature somewhat prominently my favorite instrument at the moment - the banjo. Not enough musicians use that these days but Kelly and David were looking out for me and threw that in in their first few songs like 'Light Don't Bend Around Color' which I really enjoyed and in 'The Ballad of John Ashley' which I could really take or leave.
They also throw in a violin in 'Fall Awake By Yourself', which I also enjoy lately as it's rare to hear a band branch out into other instruments beyond the tired but true guitar/bass/drums/possible keyboards combo.
The only song I really disliked was 'Damon Winder' which tells this annoying story, in this annoying staccato vocal styling. But even that, at least it's short.
By this album if you live in a rainy/cloudy area and could listen to it enough to appreciate it. Me, I'd maybe get around to stealing it off the internet.
