Sixx: A.M.: The Heroin Diaries - Music Review

By Jen Klee, HOT INDIE NEWS .com

Sixx: A.M.: The Heroin Diaries - Music Review Sixx Am's first track, "X-mas in Hell" is simply amazing. My room mate quite literally walked into the room to ask who it was. They have a lot of little snippets of spoken word, sampling sounding which I have no idea why, but I always enjoy in a song. "X-mas in Hell" has the best use of that, spoken word mixed with heavy guitars and christ

The rest of the album has some pretty good songs on it, although none as great as "X-mas in Hell". Overall, Sixx Am has kind of a somewhat dark, alternative radio feel to it. The kind of band where I could see myself telling the mallternative kids outside of Hot Topic, "Psh, I liked Sixx Am so much better when they were UNDERGROUND."

Notable songs: "Dead Man's Ballet". Has anybody ever heard of the band Virgos Merlot? Sixx Am sorta reminds me of them here. This song is really rich and full sounding with great vocals. The ending goes soft here with just vocals and pianos but it doesn't sound 'gay' or anything.

"Heart Failure" has more uses of spoken word snippets. Sometimes spoken word in songs can give off a ridiculous 'reaching' feeling, like the artist is just trying so hard to sound deep and it just sounds like a high school girl trying to talk quantum physics. I have no idea what they're saying most of the time with that here, I'm busy listening to the whole piece because it's GOOD. And when I do try to concentrate on one of the small parts like that, it doesn't seem that chumpy. Not deep but not dumb either.

This album is pretty good. The first song being so amazing and even the good songs being as good as they are, I have pretty high hopes for Sixx Am's next release. My advice for this one would be download "X-mas In Hell", maybe some of the other songs as well if you can find them. Don't buy the whole album, wait til the next cd comes out. However in the meantime, go to a show and maybe give them an extra dollar or so for 'X-mas in Hell' to motivate the next album that you're waiting on. Consider it an investment.
