So much can be said for Moses Guest's newest album, Best Laid Plans. Any group that dabbles in reggae, funk, pop, country, and classic rock and comes out sounding smooth deserves high praise. Moses Guest's rockin' tracks land in this category.
Named for lead singer Graham Guest's "fifth generation grandfather," (according to mosesguest.com), Moses Guest has been rocking the South and West for over a decade with their intelligently crafted riffs and lucid lyrics. It is difficult to classify a band with musical qualities that can be traced to Jethro Tull, Allman Brothers, Bare-Naked Ladies, Jamiroquai, and Billy Joel. Moses Guest stands solely on its own, a major accomplishment telling of the band's growth over the last eleven years.
The album kicks off with the album-titled "Best Laid Plans," a Southern rock jam book-ended by powerful and creative drumming by percussionist James Edwards and complimented by Graham Guest's gusty guitar. However, the real licks to keep attuned to are emitted from Rick Thompson's piano and organ. Featured throughout the album, Thompson's talent is most appaSSrent in funky "Colorado," and the album's best track, "Shine." Accompanied by Jeremy Horton's bluesy bass, Guest claims, "However I try, not even I, put altogether right." Perhaps in the world of "Shine" this is true, but Best Laid Plans is far from discombobulated. Keep this album on repeat.
