Tonight, a rally was held in Columbus Circle for Stephon Clark, a 22-year-old African-American man who was shot 20 times by two Sacramento police officers on March 18, 2018, in his grandmother’s backyard. Clark, a father of two, was unarmed only holding his iPhone when the two police officers who had been responding to calls that someone was breaking into vehicles in the area detected him in the backyard. The police officers mistook the iPhone for a gun when they discharged their weapons.
After the rally which included a speech by Hertencia Petersen, the aunt of Akay Gurley who was shot in 2014 by a rookie cop in the stairwell of a Brooklyn Housing complex participants took to the streets ending up in Times Square. Along the way, the NYPD arrested at least 13 protesters who were taken to the 7th precinct for booking.
