Demonstrators were Chanting “A New Grand Jury, A New Grand Jury and, What do we want? Justice, When Do We Want it? Now!” outside the rear of the Staten Island Supreme court house and across from District Attorney, Mike McMahon’s office at 130 Stuyvesant Pl. yesterday.
Jay told me SIARAPB was made up of students, people in the community and are there with a couple of major demands; 1. The new DA Michael McMahon, bring charges against Daniel Pantaleo for the murder of Eric Garner. “He can re convene a new Grand Jury, whatever it takes to try this guy, to convict him, send him to jail where he belongs. It’s an outrage. It’s been over a year and nothing has been done. The only person who has gone to jail connected to this case is Ramsey Orta, who filmed the crime. And that says volumes around the impunity that exist here in NYC and in the United States around Police brutality and Police terror. We’re going to keep fighting. We’re right here based in SI”.
“In addition, we’re demanding an end to the, so-called, Broken Windows policing which led the cops to harass, attack and kill Eric Garner. And that’s the whole political establishment is behind it. All these people portraying, fanning concern for Eric Garner, what happened, they back the same policing, racist, capitalist strategy that led to Eric Garner’s death. People like Bill De Blasio, people like Debbie Rose, the council woman who’s office is here, and, obviously, the DA.”
When I asked Phoebe why she was in support of a New Grand Jury in the case of Eric Garner vs Daniel Pantaleo, she told me, “What went down almost 2 years ago was murder and should not be forgotten and justice should happen and that means not letting this man be a police officer ever again, anymore or being paid for that in any way”.
