PHOTOS: Rocking In The New Year To End Police Brutality

A small crowd of people, a couple of hundred, gathered last night at Union Sq NYC to ring in the New Year to put an end to the Old system of Police murder lead by Carl Dix and Travis Morales of the Revolution Communist Party and Stop Mass Incarceration. Standing in the freezing cold for 2 hours before the march to Times Square began, various people took to the Megaphone to energize the crowd of why they chose to bring in the New Year with a protest.

Sumumba Sobukwe of OccuEvolve was leading people in a song entitled, “I Can’t Breathe” which turned into, “the whole dam system is guilty as Hell”.

Carl Dix addressed the crowd saying, “Let’s imagine a world where Police don’t wontedly kill our children”, “What kind of Law Enforcement are you when you need to have the Benefit of the doubt when confronting a child?”. While, in the background, the NYPD speaker was playing a recorded message continuously repeating that people would be arrested if they block Pedestrian or vehicular traffic. NYPD even handed out fliers warning the protestors with the same message.

Although there were no arrests, there were a few intense moments during the march to Times Sq where the crowd joined the larger crowd gathered to ring in the New Year, some of which joined in the “I Can’t Breathe” chant.
There was a small Die-In of around 15 people at midnight while fireworks were being shot off near Times Sq.
