PHOTOS: Protestors Assemble For Royal Shutdown At Barclays Center

Today, hundreds of protesters gathered in front of the Barclay Stadium, which has seen its own share of controversy, to again express their frustration with police brutality. The protest was off to a slow start, however, it quickly gained momentum as the protesters chanted “We can’t breathe” while standing face-to-face with NYPD officers.

The protest took place at the heel of the basketball game between the Brooklyn Nets and the Cleveland Cavaliers, which was highly publicized because the Duke of Cambridge and the Duchess of Wales attended the game during their 3 day visit to New York City. Whether the royal couple noticed the protesters, or were even aware that the protest titled “Royal Shutdown” was taking place, is not known.

Some of the players, however, wore “I Can’t Breathe” shirts during their warm-up in support of Eric Garner and the protesters, who have been taking to the streets in many U.S. cities since a Staten Island Grand Jury decided to not indict the officer involved in the death of Eric Garner.
