36 ? – Where Do We Go From Here? Music Review

a1884973727_10It’s best described as a sonic adventure.

As strange as their band name, 36? approach to their music is refreshingly simple: they make great music. With 17 tracks to choose from in the Where Do We Go From Here?  CD, I found myself as a listener both drawn to the dramatics and strong-armed into the wide-stretching lyrics.

“Soul Searching” pulled tightly. The percussions echoed in a punk-sorta-way. The lyrics were surprisingly fun and this song felt like a warm summer day on the beach. Just as Fitz & The Tantrums shower a listener with eclectic sounds and  a wall of electronic groove, this indie band happens to create a sound that peels layer upon layer away from the ordinary. And, did I mention they have a flute?

“Head First” is equally entertaining. I love the beat and the chorus. The daunting task of 17 tracks is one thing, but this song stuck out the most to me. I found myself hitting repeat at least 17 times on this track alone! The music bed sounds illustrious, but not pretentious enough that you lose faith in the indie tone. It’s got this sound that mixes some sort of organ with a slightly psychedelic twist.

It’s so cool. 36?  is so Canadian-ly-cool.

“Are you Scared Yet” and “Beauty/Strong” each fall into a robust wall of sound. I felt my mind falling into a swirl of riffs, drifting vocals, uplifting percussions, and charming prose.

“The Man At the Door,” “Oxys,” “Ms. Brown,” and “Kthxbye” are all clever, modern thrills. They easily slip the listener into a coma of sonic pleasure.

Overall, I have to give Where Do We Go From Here? a solid A+. Besides conjuring up the same album title as Michael Damian, 36?  nails a solid, no questions asked package. Fans of indie music, rock, and especially pop music will find something they like!
