Impuritan: Make It Look Like Nothing Happened – Music Review

20140521_0429Go big or go home.

Strong guitar licks, trippy baselines and whirlwinds of sounds, the band Impuritan has it all packaged in its ‘Make It Look Like Nothing Happened’ album. At times the chapters listen like a concept album. At other times the tracks are symphonies all in their own. It takes patience to listen to these tracks, but overall, a rewarding audio experience.

“Monster Acolyte” felt jarring from the beginning. I found this a peculiar out-of-the-gate track. “Wax/Wane” came across as monumental orchestration – as if the sounds were coming in waves. The vocals felt very dark, eery. This is a way more psychedelic experience. There’s a lot of noise in this track to get through – the layers are thick. It’s a perfect song to sit back, close your eyes and get lost in the spinning audio circle.

“Sunspot Punks” feels exactly that – punk. It’s raw and ripped with sweat.

As the tracks fall down one-by-one, the listener fees like they are left hanging on stunning guitar riffs, surf-like orchestrations and terrestrial sonic sounds. Songs like “Radioactive Love Tide” and “The Only Way Out” creep along, stirring the listener’s heart and playing head games.

The story Impuritan is trying to share is a loud one and songs like “Primeval Circles” and “The Only Way Out” can confuse the listener into a mind-bending trance. Background noise? Maybe, but overall, the presentation Impuritan brings in ‘Make It Look Like Nothing Happened’ leaves the listener questioning, “okay, what did I really just hear?”

Their sound can be thrilling, soothing and overall, quite unique. I’d like to hear more!
