Mafukuzela: Songs Of Freedom A Musical Review – Cultural Review

S KHUMALO 1ARTSCAPE Theatre, Cape Town

Starring Sibongile Khumalo

What a delight! In a country where displays of cultural tradition, such as song and dance, have increasingly become mere fodder for the tourism industry, and where name-dropping of past heroes in the struggle for equality has become a game in increasingly corrupt and sycophantic politics, Mafukuzela – Songs of Freedom bursts onto the stage with an honesty and genuine sense of respect that is refreshing. Watching this production is nothing less than a full body experience. It sends toes tapping, hands clapping, hearts pounding, brings tears to the eyes and cogs reeling in the mind. This reviewer cannot speak highly enough of it  – a production so memorable, exciting, and engaging that it should be compulsory viewing for all South Africans and visitors to South Africa.

Mafukuzela is a narrative concert celebrating South Africa’s heritage through honouring John Langalibalele Dube, well known as Mafukuzela, J L Dube, a leader, priest, journalist, teacher, scholar, author and the first president of the African National Congress, a man who fought tirelessly for the education of black children and for the freedom of all Africans.   Accompanied by a ten-piece orchestra, the production offers an exciting medley of Gospel, Indigenous music, choral, jazz and classical sounds. One of the highlights of the show is the wonderful, internationally renowned singer Sibongile Khumalo who rocked the room and had people singing with her and dancing in their seats. Along with the songs there was traditional dance, beautifully performed, and a number of soloists who sang with passion and skill.

In addition, what makes this production particularly special is that it was a sponsored event which created job opportunities for South African artists and is assisting in the process of social cohesion as it has a mixed cast from different races, religion and cultures.
