Gatsby’s Green Light: Annalee – Music Review

20130519_2348Review: B

How appropriate that one of the summer’s most anticipated films, The Great Gatsby, and Connecticut outfit, Gatsby’s Green Light (GGL) is on the list to review. After a few listens, GGL surely grows on the listener and sparks a restored interest in a band like The Grateful Dead. GGL’s solid songwriting, easy-going style and Americana fusion couldn’t be further than the opulent and embellished roaring parties of the original Gatsby.

That’s what makes GGL so interesting.

The title track (both studio and live versions are on this collection) are such full-sounding pieces. The catchy guitar riff sandwiched with quirky, conversational vocals is a toe-tapping adventure. At first the guitar tricks the listener to thinking it’s folksier, but during the bridge, this burst of blues ribbons out like streamers. As the song picks up, the listener joins in singing ‘Annalee!”

“Harkin” has this lush horn spray that really comes together nicely.  “The Queen” slows it down a bit. As a listener, it was a bit of a downer coming off of the faster, funkier, “Harkin.”

“Catwalk of Life (live)” has this sweet-sounding disposition. Make sure to stay for the entire song, as once again, an intricate guitar takes center stage. This time, at the end of the song.

“Comedian (Live)” is a fun track to move along. It has this positivity going for it, but at the same time, the music bed feels a bit gritty and warn out.

Overall, ‘Annalee’ is a enjoyable collection. The standouts were definitely the title track (both studio and live), “Harkin” and “Catwalk of Life” (live). It’s easy to hear the energy and perhaps the improvised jamming in the live tracks.
