Cristiano Tiozzo: Private Auditorium, New York, NY – Concert Review

Last Sunday I was invited to a private concert in the West side of Upper Manhattan. The concert was part of the Living Now concert series, and was hosted and performed by New York-based Italian pianist Cristiano Tiozzo.

The first thing you notice when you enter Mr. Tiozzo’s music room is a Fazioli grand piano against the windows in the back of the salon. The celling and the walls are completely covered in a wide spectrum of reds, blues, and yellows toned down with brushes of white. The painting culminates in a sun-shaped mirror stuck to the middle of the celling reflecting the entire room as a fish-eye lens image.

Before the concert begins, Mr. Tiozzo greets the audience and talks about the painting. In fact, the art work was commissioned to his friend Chiara Galletto, an art healer who uses the Aura Soma system, therefore each brushstroke serves the purpose of spiritual healing.

Shortly after the greeting, Mr. Tiozzo explains that May is a month in which different cultures celebrate their mothers. Then he asks the audience to think about their moms. He says “mother is not only your personal relationship with your mom but every story we relate to our mothers,” and he offers pen and paper for those who want to write their thoughts down.

Afterwards he remarks that we are spiritually together despite our beliefs and religious differences, and asks us to mentally repeat a healing prayer to the “intelligence” we desire. He

also asks us to let go of our personal tastes and to simply let the improvisation flow.

Lights are dimmed and perfect consonances emerge softly from the piano. The room warms up and Mr. Tiozzo plays fast and virtuoso melodies on top of organic chord progressions that are sometimes voiced as a chorale and sometimes voiced as a symphony, depending on the moment.

Mr. Tiozzo is one of those rare pianists who can master in detail the elements of a broad array of musical genres. His eclecticism is demonstrated not only in wide-raging musical pieces fully improvised, but also, in his impeccable classical (European) technique, in his sense of structure, and in the spiritual trance that takes over him –and his audience- while performing.

His sound is bright, mature and universal. When he plays, he can evoke anyone from Shubert, Bach, Satie, or Morricone to Rubén Gonzalez, Oscar Peterson or Fats Domino.

This ability is what leads Cristiano Tiozzo to communicate directly with his audience. Through music, he is able to navigate through different cultures and time periods, very useful tools for any musician especially if he is a spiritual healer. No wonder American saxophonist David Liebman said Mr. Tiozzo has “Wonderful musicianship and inventiveness…In particular I was impressed with his sensitive and mature approach to the piano itself”.

Cristiano Tiozzo performs regularly in New York City and Italy and next month he will release “Rebirth”, a live recording of his winter solstice concert which will be available on iTunes under the independent label “Spiritual Flowers”.
