G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013) – Movie Review

20130505_0833GI Joe is a movie released under PG 13 and has a runtime of 110 minutes. It belongs to the action, adventure and sci-fi genre.  Jon Chu directed the movie and the script is written by Rhett Reese and  Paul Wernick.

The GI force is ordered by Jonathan Pryce the American President to obtain the nuclear weapons in Pakistan. While on their assignment, they are attacked by men with high powered weapons of war. The team fights back  but they lose, resulting in the deaths of all members of the team except for  Roadblock, Flint and Jaye, who  manage to hide in a well nearby.

When the Joes hear the news about themselves, they are flabbergasted: the Joes are being held responsible for the attack in Pakistan.

The surviving comrades return to the US and they obtain a rundown gym as their base. Because of their failed mission, the President replaces them with the Cobra as the new American protective force. Upon their being replaced when they shouldn’t have been replaced, it makes them no longer trust the government, including the President. Their only recourse is to turn to someone who won’t betray them – General Joseph Colton (Bruce Willis).

Meanwhile, Snake Eyes, Jinx, and Storm Shadow who are also after the Cobra, join forces with them.  Now,  they have to unravel the truth, find out who is behind the chaos, and retaliate for their fallen comrades. In itself this would be difficult but now, without government support, they are actually fighting the U.S. Government itself!

The movie is entertaining and I was almost blown away by the action and suspense of their combats. It was, however, disappointing that  Channing Tatum’s (Duke ) performance is  brief and  Bruce Willis as General Joseph Colton only shows up in the latter part of the movie.

What I like most was the special effects, especially during the fight on the mountain.  Nonetheless, although the story’s  plot  is only so-so and the movie is predictable, still, it is not  boring because of the fast paced actions involved. As compared with the previous version, this one is more down to earth and less cartoony.

The ninja fight is one of the best parts of the movie. The fight between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow is also commendable and exciting, worth attentively watching every move, and even breaking it down frame to frame (if you have that feature).

Two characters I think deserve mention here for their acting. Although some people question Dwayne Johnson as being the best man for the lead character, Roadblock, (Marvin F. Hinton), he  once again proved his acting prowess in this movie. Ray Stevenson as Firefly is so menacing that his performance stood out amongst the villains. Others actors and characters are D.J. Cotrona as Flint (Dashiell R. Faireborn) and Adrianne Palicki as Lady Jaye (Jaye Burnett) of the GI Joe.  Byung-hun Lee stars as Storm Shadow (Thomas Arashikage), Ray Park as Snake Eyes and Ray Stevenson as Firefly

GI Joe is  a pretty good mix of gunfights, explosions, physical combats, automobiles and technology. This may not be the best action movie ever, but neither is it mediocre. People who love action and fight sequences shouldn’t be disappointed. The costumes and special effects also add weight to the overall quality and aesthetic appeal of the movie. If you love action, give GI Joe a try.
