Identity Thief (2013) – Movie Review

20130503_2023Identity thief is a comedy, crime story with a runtime of 111 minutes. It is written and directed by   Craig Mazin (screenplay), Jerry Eeten (story)  and  Seth Gordon respectively.

The story revolves around Jason Bateman as Sandy Bigelow Patterson who works in the accounts department, processing, managing inhouse accounts for  their company. One day he receives  a call from Florida reminding him of a salon appointment. This is  absurd because  he lives in Denver Colorado.

A victim of identity theft with his credit card now maxed out, he has to make a way to clear his name and deliver the culprit to his new boss (John Cho) as Daniel Casey. What’s worse is that his card was used to buy drugs from a man named Paolo. Morris Chestnut as Detective Reilly comes to investigate drugs under his possession.  Sandy also receives  mails for delinquent credit  cards from various companies. With this, his boss is adamant to give the job  to him which would require handling huge amounts of money for the company.

Law enforcers inform him that he cannot press charges to an absentee person, so he needs to get the culprit from Florida to face litigation in Denver. With his boss giving Sandy a week to clear his name, he sets out to Florida to find the other Sandy who is impersonating him. Being a good natured person, Sandy plans not to make charges anymore but just to let the thief, who is a lady, confess to his boss that she indeed  stole his identity and made the exorbitant purchases under his name.

Ready with his plane money  as well as return tickets for two, he sets out to Florida believing that with his good intentions all will be well – but great obstacles are along the way. Marisol (Génesis Rodríguez) and Julian (T.I.) try to kill Diana (Melissa McCarthy), the thief, for scamming their boss Paolo. The bounty  hunter, Robert Patrick as Skiptracer, is also after her.

I find the personality of Diana, funny and endearing. She talks a lot and is bubbly. I laughed out loud when they wrestled inside Diana’s house and when Sandy, out of desperation to control her, hit Diana with a guitar. Although Diana goes with different aliases to steal people’s credit cards, Sandy realizes in one of their conversations that she does not even know her real name because she is an abandoned child.

The duo’s acting at the highway, with Sandy running after Diana and trying to convince her to come with him is  hilarious and convincing. Sandy realizes that they could not make a plane trip back to Denver because authorities would  discover their double identity. During the car  trip, Diana attempts to escape several times and would have except something changes her mind. The story is funny and I love the ending. The film makes me realize that with love and kindness, people can change for the better.

Although the pacing drags in the beginning, the background music  however is upbeat and lively. The characters play their part well. At the rate of 10, I  give this movie a score of  6 or 7.
