The Last Stand (2013) – Movie Review

20130422_0635The Last Stand is an action, crime and thriller movie with a runtime of 107 minutes. This is a comeback movie for Arnold Schwarzenegger.  It is written and directed by Andrew Knauer and Jee-woon Kim.

Arnold plays  Ray Owens,  the sheriff of the small town of  Sommerton Junction, near the border of Mexico. Sheriff Ray Owens has a small number of  deputies under him, but they probably are not equipped or adequate for what is heading towards them. Gabriel Cortez, a notorious drug kingpin, is on the loose and heading towards the border of Mexico. He has a hostage and a private army of  high powered guns. On his flight to the border, Sommerton Junction and Sheriff  Ray Owens and the few deputies that he has, stands in Cortez’s way.

What will Owens do as a sheriff  with not enough arms and artillery to stop the criminals? There’s not much time to waste for the FBI, and time is running out. If Cortez is able to pass this last town before Mexico, he  will be lost forever and the government will have no more jurisdiction on him once he crosses the border.

The possibility of passing Sommerton Junction by Gabriel Cortez,  played by Eduardo Noriega, is not thought imminent by the authorities since he will need to cross a canyon to get to the border,  and they have a roadblock in front of him. Nonetheless, the FBI’s attempts to barricade and stop the running fugitive does not hold up against Cortez and his men. Along with his firepower, Cortez’s driving skills enable him to immobilize the SWAT vehicles that pursue and try to block him.

At this point, Sheriff Owens does not have much of an option except to take matters into his own hands. But how can he and his handful of deputies contend with the fierce and blood-thirsty criminals? There is no longer time to wait for reinforcements from the FBI! Cortez  is in town and have murdered someone already.

To their relief however, one of the residents of the town, Lewis Dinkum, played by  Johnny Knoxville, has an arsenal of his own. Owens asks Dinkum’s help in protecting their town.  Lewis equips the Sheriff Department so that they have, maybe not the manpower, but at least the firepower now to fight and defend their town.  The sequence that follows is a series of shootouts and daring stunts from the side of Owens as well as from the bad guys.

Owens kills the strong men of Cortez and Cortez tries to bribe him before their fistfight but Owens refuses the money. As expected, the hero handcuffs Cortez and delivers him to the custody of  Agent Bannister of the FBI, played by Forest Whitaker. (Interesting NOTE: Forest Whitaker in real life just recently survived as the victim of an internet death hoax. Not true! He was not murdered nor die of

natural causes after all. Forest Whitaker is still alive. But so effective was this hoax that even I was about to write, “the recently deceased Forest Whitaker,” until I searched for more information about his passing and discovered that, lo and behold! – there is a Resurrection after all! – and sometimes sooner and more spontaneous than we thought …)

Being a fan of Arnold, I once again enjoyed his performance in another movie. Although he is quite old, his charisma and appeal has not yet waned. At least not for me. Although the pace of The Last Stand was slow at the beginning, once the action began, it was enjoyable and sustained by the car stunts, shootouts and fistfights. The movie’s tone is not so serious and it was amusing to hear Owens with his one liner dialogues (something that Arnold is famous for, i.e. – “I’ll be back…”). The characterization was great, and I believe most of them resonate with the audience. If you are looking for entertainment, fun and action, this is a good movie to watch.
