Hatebreed: The Divinity of Purpose – Music Review

20130422_0610Rating: A

Aggression. Aggravation. And alert. Any of the 12 tracks on HATEBREED’S The Divinity of Purpose may alienate or event offend some listeners, but give these pieces a second listen.

The first track, “Put It to the Torch” peals away the little cilia hairs on your eardrum. No, seriously. The unrecognizable lyrics (typical for speed metal and the hoarse-singers at the helm) somehow get ignored when all-of-a-sudden the chorus comes out the shadows. I suppose the word ‘chorus’ is used lightly here as there really is no vocal range and the octave monitor never moves. With clenched jaws and hardened fists, this song really jumps the listener into the blazing arsenal of songs!

“Honor Never Dies” harnesses a rapid fire of patriotism. The lyrics are audible and recognizable. The passion is spewed like a hornet’s nest of exploding drums and spitfire vocals. The guitar riff at one point is backlit in this almost-melodic arrangement. This far into the game, the second track is a keeper.

“Own Your World” has this amazing military like ‘cheer.’ The back and forth between the lead vocalist and the backing ‘chorus’ is addictive. Just as the previous two tracks, the percussion bed is numbing and so fast paced it starts to sound a like.

I really like what HATEBREED does with its percussion in “Bitter Truth.” The drums sound almost like a helicopter hovering over your head.

It’s all white knuckles on the very abrupt-starting “Boundless (Time to Murder It). As the vocalist proclaims “let’s go” hang on for the ride of the entire collection. This one stood out as do “Dead Man Breathing” and “Idolized and Vilified.” The listener feels torn and anger, but on a deeper level, they just might feel embraced by the strangely positive lyrics.
