Urban Astronauts: EP – Music Review

20130422_0554Rating: C+

While listening to the various mixes of “Animal” from the Urban Astronauts’ EP it’s as if

the Pet Shop Boys got in a room with Garbage and decided to breed. Make no mistake, the crunchy riffs and diamond-laced female vocals chill, but the cascade of mixes on the EP is overkill.

The digitized rock – lush guitar riffs on the radio edit stand out the most. Besides the radio edit, Pedro Delgardo’s mix is probably my favorite. This mix sends a bit of a seedy chill down my spine. It’s very back alley. Fans of Soft Cell might dig this mix.

As tempting as it is to compare some of the other mixes to very early Depeche Mode, the electronic or ‘rocktronica’ displayed in these tracks do set the mood for a great dance. However, missing are the distinct digital vibrations and movements that stand out.

I wanted a more differentiation between the mixes. I suppose I was looking for another “Sandstorm” but the Urban Astronauts hit the average mark.
