Brandi Carlie, The Lone Bellow at Beacon Theatre – Concert Review

Anyone who has been to the Beacon Theatre knows that the venue lends itself to a rich and mystical evening. This show was no exception. The Lone Bellow opened the evening with tracks from their self titled debut album. Plays of their new singles on local public radio hardly prepare you for how great their live performance is going to be. The Lone Bellow’s deep, resonating tone is built on the foundation of country, gospel, and sweet American love story-telling. The lead vocals of Zach Williams are earnest and willful. Kanene Doheney Pipkin appears as a mysterious beauty strumming mandolin and when she sings you feel the depth of her soul in each note. The paired vocals are awe inspiring. The Lone Bellow’s hipster soul Americana blew the room wide open. I am certain they made some new fans that night and those (like myself) who already had a piqued interest in the band were now full on believers.

But that night, so many were there to see Brandi.

“We’ve waited months for this… but she’s so worth it”, gushes an eager fan of headliner Carlile. Tonight’s show was originally on the calendar in October when Hurricane Sandy hit, and the show was cancelled. This evening honored tickets from that original show. Brandi has built herself an army of devoted fans. The brunette, sweet faced girl next door holds no punches. Her newest album Bear Creek was produced by the legendary T Bone Burnett. The track “Raise Hell” paints the picture of a woman scorned by love. In avenging her broken heart Brandi makes you feel every inch of her misery, in a really good way. “Keep Your Heart Young” is an homage to a simpler time, brimming with endearing childhood memories strung together prettier than candy colored Christmas lights. Her songs are beautiful but it’s Brandi herself that makes you fall in love. She is real, powerful, humble, fun, and fierce. She stopped the show, literally, by going fully acoustic for one song. All instruments unplugged and her own vocals unmiked, she used the rooms natural acoustics to woo her audience. Brandi has an arsenal of hits and her fans belted the lyrics to each one. It was a great night at the Beacon.
