New York’s Burlesque Scene: Floating Kabarette – Cultural Review

20130413_1501First presented as a popular form of satire, performance art, and adult entertainment, Burlesque shows have enticed many generations of New Yorkers. With numerous shows to choose from, New York has plagued us with the gift of choices- with so many around, which do I attend? Floating Kabarette at the Galapagos Art Space solves this issue.

Built in DUMBO, one cannot help but be overwhelmed with the sight of the Brooklyn Bridge, and the charming cobblestone streets adding character to all the restaurants and shops it houses. Every Saturday night, the Galapagos Art Space has a ring of excited visitors waiting to be admitted to the show. Purchasing tickets online beforehand is a must! This show is both a well kept secret and a place of celebration for many returning spectators.

The dimly lit room radiates a feeling of sanctity and excitement. The tables are close together, tightly wound around the stage and the levitra online pharmacy walkway for the very welcoming host. Two floors of small tables, lit by candles surrounded by bustling servers and waitresses- all very attentive. The dark maroon curtain hangs in anticipation for the show to begin.

The community formed around this weekly show is definitely felt the moment you are seated, people begin ordering drinks immediately and include newcomers on their past experiences. The bar is stocked with exotic beers, different brands of whiskey, scotch, wine and a diverse list of signature cocktails- all incredibly delicious and not watered down which is a true test of quality when going out in New York City.

Before the curtains open, the guests are greeted by the host of the evening. If you are up for offensive jokes, crude comedy, and all around hilarious time- this is the perfect place for you. Bringing the crowd together and encouraging everyone get as many drinks as humanly possible, he creates an atmosphere where no one can be embarassed by the show. The show is a culmination of humorous juggling acts, singers, acrobatic twins, belly dancers, satire skits and, in true spirit of burlesque, sexy strip skits. As each act progresses, it is hard to tell which is the crowd favorite.

At the end, after the show has won even the introverts over, you cannot wait to come back to this charming town, to this amazing, well respected burlesque show. For only forty dollars a ticket, this show is not only the most appropriate way to celebrate; an engagement, a promotion or bachelorette party, but also anniversaries and weddings. The Galapagos Art Space threatens a good time with their Floating Kabarette ads, it delivers nothing less.
