Cassettes Won’t Listen: Evinspacey – Music Review

20121227_0855RIYL: LCD Soundsystem, Daft Punk, Death Cab for Cutie

As if that bizarre ventriloquist video on You Tube wasn’t enough to prove once and for all that Kevin Spacey is officially not cool, witness the following. Jason Drake, Los Angeles resident and musical wunderkind goes looking for a great name to accompany the new disk for his solo-project Cassettes Won’t Listen. (Why they won’t listen is another story entirely.) After some thought, Drake hitches on that most celebrated of movie stars, Mr. Spacey. Second thoughts occur, but in the end he decides to go with his gut and the 2011 release KEVINSPACEY is born.

Cue Mr. Spacey’s lawyers. Such a blatant homage is clearly unacceptable. A cease and desist order is expeditiously issued and the resulting title winds up being infinitely more awesome than the original. Witness: EVINSPACEY, the CD.

Most of the tracks on the album are heavy on space age blips and relentless drum loops, but the mood isn’t quite mainstream. Off-kilter

synth lines and a desolate vibe frequently creep into the foreground, giving the melodies more depth than most Top-40 pop. You might say its club music for hipsters, but in a good way.

The standout on EVINSPACEY is without question “Perfect Day”, a feel good track pulsating with guitar strumming, hand claps and electronics. The chorus will lodge itself in your brain as Drake urges listeners repeatedly to “Look out the window/ On a perfect day.” But the verses are much more pensive with lines like “You can see my face as I start to wave/ as I start to fade/…Miles from your room/ I see the clouds upon your roof.”

“The Echoes” is another strong track that boasts a great synth hook and lyrics that attempt to guide listeners through a dark urban dystopia. Midway through the album is another nugget, “Stuck”, which conjures a beguiling dreamscape of buzzy electronics and soaring astral beeps. “There’s no one left to impress” Drake sings, “The only sounds existing are these.” When you let yourself get lost in the digital wasteland that is EVINSPACEY, that’s statement couldn’t be truer.
