Erez And The End: Silent Mountains – Music Review

20121218_0613With the digital music revolution, it seems like the art of making an album has seen its day pass on. Even with the collectors market for vinyl, the fascination seems to be more for the artwork and value of a rarity than a true appreciation of a total body of work. Some artists still make music to be an experience, and if you love music, these groups are right up your alley. EREZ AND THE END make music that hearkens back to a bygone era of songwriting where the quality matters as much as the production. It seems like what we sorely need right now is a lot more albums like the Silent Mountains EP.

Bringing out the band approach to the Rock and Folk, singer song-writer genre,  EREZ AND THE END makes musical statements without ever getting close to a shout. The result is you actually listen to the music, which is refreshing really. “Better Days” is funky and uptempo, but solemn. Erez Eisenman himself has a gravely deliver that will remind you of TOM WAITS. SPRINGSTEEN back in the day and LEONARD COHEN. He lets the emotions of the words do the talking without relying on volume or over-driven guitars. Much the same as DIRE STRAITS took the BOB DYLAN approach and applied it to the workings of a band, the sound of the band takes a lot of forms. “Here In the Dark” doesn’t impose itself on you as much as it creeps into your ear and gets inside. Considering the relative age of the band, tracks like this display a seriousness and maturity you almost never see anymore. The title track comes next and has a wistful poetry to it that I really like. Erez is a story teller in the classic sense. The instrumentation is perfect, especially the guitar work. “No More Cryin” is a sad song of lost love that sound as if they could have been written by

the likes of LOU REED or even JOHNNY CASH. The guitar solo, like all of them on the EP, is beautifully restrained. “For A Little While” closes things out with another introspective-themed tune. It’s good to hear that making music like this still matters to some bands. I suspect they will strike a chord with a larger audience as a result.
