Roxie Randle: Little Victory EP – Music Review

Music City (a.k.a. Nashville, TN) has put countless singer/songwriters on the map. It is a place that lives in the myth of American lore, where artists get made and where some go to die too, figuratively. Hailing from Illinois and hoping to make it big out of Nashville is ROXIE RANDLE. With a great new EP she is making a name for herself bringing great songs, solid singing and a fresh perspective on the style. Hopefully this just the beginning of the next chapter of her story.

Little Victory is strong out of the gate with “You Don’t Know A Thing About Love”. Blending pop country, folk and lite-rock with grown up sensibilities, the track is a winner

and should be a single release. Randle impresses immediately by eschewing the typical histrionics of many singers of her generation. She does justice to the song with a well-honed touch for melodies that rings true in her emotive lyrics too. Rather than try to over-power the lines, she is subtle and mature musically, which is a nice contrast to other albums of a similar nature I have heard of late. The neat and tight production of Music City legend Eddie Gore helps brings the refined qualities out of the songs, without any studio trickery or anything that would take away from Randle herself as an artist.

“Going Nowhere” has a bit of the GRETCHEN WILSON Pop Country sound to it. However, it’s not like most modern commercial country that is empty and soulless. We’re talking old-school sounds and values in a modern context. “Going Nowhere” has a naturally sweet, southern sass to it that I really like. “October Rain” has great lyrics and is a deep, love ballad. Again, she’s not trying to break the mold here musically, but rather assert herself as a quality writer and vocalist. “Learning to Fly” is another spell of solid pop goodness. Sunny and positive with a slick pedal steel guitar laying it down, the song is really infectious and has cleverly doubled vocals in the chorus. “You Were Wrong” is another charmer of a tune with a defiant, strong and classy delivery that captures the feeling and mood of the story Randle is trying to convey. The only down moment on this EP is when it is over. Hopefully she can put out a full release soon.
