Twice Renewed is not just a great title for an album, it is a central theme for the band MOUTHFUL OF DAISY. Had they came out at a different time than the present day, say fifteen years ago, they might be characterized as college indie or late blooming alt rock. However, today enmeshed in with the amalgam that is rock music, they are on good ground among their peers and those seeking something new and awesome to hear. Plus, with some of the tribulations and turnover the band has had for the better, it is a good time to be an up and coming band such as this one.
“Girl In Need of A Lullaby” starts with an urgent beat and cool stabbing rhythms on guitar. The jangle of perfect backing tracks comes in to meet your ears soon and you are hooked in deep. “Lose Love” is another infectious rocker with a vocal line that calls to mind “Everlong” by THE FOO FIGHTERS, but more like a tribute to them rather than a copy cat thing. I really like how the songs flow together and I could not stop nodding my head to these cuts. “After Party” starts off mellow, but the chill part falls away and the the track rocks into high gear, once again. Guitarist J’ace Franklin is really the mastermind of the band writing the songs and leading the way on guitar and keys, but all the
pieces all fit together nicely. Simple, captivating and dramatic; the songs on Twice Renewed really have a lot of legs and many of the songs could be radio/internet singles. Tracks like “Masterpiece to Perfection”, “Surf Song”, and “Broken Wings” do fall into a bit of a formula for my tastes, but sometimes with a band if something really works, don’t mess with a good thing. To me two of the finest songs the band has are the sensational “Planet Fluff” (cute BLACK SABBATH reference there) and the haunting “Taken Away”. This album is a good next step for the band and now that they are solidified by new lead vocalist Kaija Kinney, I’ll be following them very closely to see where they can take this promising sound.
