Miles Jones: The Jones Act (Part III) – Music Review

I would never say I am an authority on rap music anymore. For most of the last decade I have heard such a stunning lack of originality and flavor that it turned me off to the genre completely. Occasionally you hear something solid that takes you back, but usually the majority of contenders leaves me cold. That is why when I heard MILES JONES’ new album THE JONES ACT (PART III) it took me back a bit. Not because it is remaking a classic sound, as much because it is an artist trying get outside of his comfort zone and standout in a way that is fresh and inventive.

Miles background as a DJ and producer in Toronto shines through on the first song “All Lies”. Instead of the immature and over the top production, the beat is chill and his flow is nice. This is music you could enjoy in the car or at the club and it would be in the background either as filler. The sing-song chorus was a nice surprise, making use of catchyness and not relying on auto-tune or other musical chicanery. “Maybe Tomorrow” continues the club sound with a tight flow that could rival a Kanye, B.O.B. or a Big Boi at times. Another hummable chorus is the perfect soundtrack to good times and bubbly pouring. Other tracks show Miles to be a chameleon of sorts. “Raw” has the American Southern Rap sound (think The Clipse) without any of the fluffy bravado that sub-genre is famous for. “Fresh” is a throwback cut. A backing track that could almost be an old-school, R&B theme gives way to a slick word-play and smooth beats. “Catch My Breath” is the usual sultry, slow jam. “Satisfied” also has that back-in-the-day, mid-90s feel that brought me back for a minute. “Scorpio” goes deep to the 1970s via the late 1980s of Hip-Hop. Definitely the most pure rap track on the album, it is tough enough for street guys and cool enough for club heads. Other standout songs are “Sunshine City” and “Somebody”. Miles Jones who has a little something for everybody, is one to watch and has made a believer out of me.
