Dashboard Madonna: Neon Life EP – Music Review

If you love music, one of you priorities is finding the perfect soundtrack to your summer. You want that music to be light and fun; unobtrusive, but still great music for the beach or cocktails at the bar. I think I’ve found my summer music in DASHBOARD MADONNA’s new EP Dead Men Tell No Tales. Every song is a laid back, funky slice of tuneful delight. These songs stayed with me long after the music stopped which is always one of the highest compliments I can give as a reviewer.

The title track encompasses everything that is great about this group. A pastoral organ gives way to a searing guitar line while a burbling bass and samba drum part make you bounce your head and hips. The aptly named lead singer Honey is a chanteuse of the highest order. She has a good range and a very effective, sultry quality to her voice, especially when layering her melodies for full effect. She doesn’t overpower overnight canadian viagra her lines because she doesn’t need to. The track is near pop perfection, short and sweet as can be. Main songwriter Sacha makes sure to incorporate little bits of ear candy in the keys to suck you in closer track after track. “Starting from Scratch” in another danceable little ditty. Jazzy funk guitars blend with some cool percussion and a tight bass line. On the chorus Honey’s vocal lines resemble a rising helium balloon, gentle and effortless. A nice bit of turntable scratching might perk up the ears of DJ’s around the globe too.

“Up & Away” features a little rap vocal from Sacha with Honey accenting and backing him up. Such a chill song and enjoyable I just wish it was longer than under three minutes. I could see this being a song to jam out to live and extend the dizzying grooves. “Slam Dunked” is a more uptempo dance track with a sweet keyboard lead line and old school wah-wah drenched solo. This definitely a club track. “Bond Girls” is not just a clever song lyrically, the musically has more to offer than the average cut too. Mellow verses give way to happy and vibrant chorus full of promise. The simmer to a boil dynamics of the track reeled me in and I doubt anyone could hear the refrain of “Bond Girls are Forever” and not have it stuck in their head for hours. I did. In the course of the final track “The Girl In The Polka Dot Dress”, Honey lets it all hang out a singer. Coy ingenue, full bodied diva and soulful R&B queen
