Tony DeSimone: As We Go ‘Round The Sun – Music Review

RIYL: Brett Dennen, Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson

New Jersey-based singer/songwriter Tony DeSimone might be an intimidating guest to have over for dinner. By night he belts out strummy folk and pop tunes perfect for the summertime and by day he’s, well, a rocket scientist. With a PhD in physics and a house in Princeton, DeSimone is that rarest of artists that can write a song titled “As We Go ‘Round The Sun” and mean it literally. That might be fun (mass! inertia!), but lucky for us common folk, DeSimone’s music tends to be a more easily accessible and lighthearted Brand viagra over the net affair.

After showcasing a more broader range of styles on his 2011 LP ‘The Second Time Around’, DeSimone hones in on a more tropical vibe for his recently released 5 track EP. Artists like Jack Johnson and Jimmy Buffet have made a pretty penny over the years by packaging their easy-going surfer boy ethos for a mass audience, and the better tracks on ‘As We Go ‘Round The Sun’ do a great job at reminding us why.

The title track is a breeze of fresh air that’s perfect accompaniment for sitting on the beach and watching the waves. A super catchy radio-ready tune with ukulele and bongos, it puts a slight twist on the usual plea for worldwide unity, arguing that it’s not just the earth that we all share but the sun as well.

“The Rapture” is a charming duet that conjures a similar feel to Bon Jovi’s duet with Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland. Head over heels in love, DeSimone toys with the idea that the end of the world might not be so bad with your soul-mate by your side. “U & I” is yet another keeper that pairs lyrics about a lovely blue-eyed girl with generous hand claps, piano and a jangly ukulele riff that recalls Trains monster hit “Hey, Soul Sister”.

In a world where ukuleles have suddenly become the hip instrument of choice, DeSimone fills his tunes with more than enough sincerity to make it clear he’s not just trying to cash in on a trend. It’s impossible to resist feeling the love.
