Xenia Dunford And The Eastern Exile: Lonely Streets EP – Music Review

RIYL: Norah Jones, KT Tunstall, Sara Bareilles, Feist

After earning a respectable fan base playing solo gigs in Boston, Xenia Dunford moved westward to try to increase her profile, and with the solid songwriting on her recently released ‘Lonely Streets EP’ she’s done just that. With support from her newly formed backing band, dubbed the Eastern Exiles, Dunford’s sultry vocals guide listeners through a variety of heartfelt scenarios framed by rock, jazz and blues-based melodies.

A majority of tracks here deal with loneliness in one form or another, but in a thoughtful way that seems to impart resilience rather than despair. Its hard avoid comparisons to Norah Jones with songs like “High and Dry”, a standout anchored by piano, Wurlitzer organ and Dunford’s gentle croon. There’s a depth and maturity to the song that hits home, and the lyrics are nicely refined, featuring lines like “I spread myself thin/ Hoping you would too/ And now there’s nothing left for me to do.”

“The Only Cialis tadalafil 100mg One” is the most seductive of the offerings here and finds Xenia inviting a special someone to lay beside her for some old fashioned sexual healing. “We’ll lace our fingers like a spiders web”, she coos, “With no traces of start and end.” And on “Best I’ve Ever Had” she explores the comedown, asking over a steady snare and country-western guitar “Have you been fallin’ out of love all along?”

“Every Now and Again” is perhaps the most beautiful track here and blurs the line between rock and blues in a way similar to some of John Lennon’s solo efforts. The lyrics deal frankly with feeling unanchored and adrift as Dunford asks her sisters, “Do you feel lost standing still?” and then her brothers, “Do you feel gone even in the space you fill?”

There’s something timeless about these sentiments, and that’s what makes the ‘Lonely Streets EP’ such a mesmerizing listen. Yearning to find “some peace of mind” would sound cliché coming from most artists these days, but like so many of the lines in these songs, when Xenia sings it, you believe it.
