Baloji: Kinshasa Succursale – Music Review

Congolese born, Belgian raised rapper Baloji (Sorcerer in Swahili) re-discovers his African roots, putting forth a beautifully composed album full of heart and musical energy.  Kinshasa Succursale takes its listener through Baloji’s exploration of cultural identity, atop live Congolese instrumentation and ebullient beats.  Rapping in French and Swahili, Baloji’s delivery is nothing short of compelling. On his own personal quest of self-discovery, he returns to his native homeland to record with local and international musicians, resulting in a multifarious collection of impressive songs.

Diverging from what one may consider as traditional hip-hop music, songs like “Nazongi Ndako” and “Karibou Ya Bintu” clearly exemplify his abilities in hybridizing and blending various genres.  While lyrics move steadily upon underlying instrumentals, Baloji communicates his story with clear intention. Mixing hip-hop and rock, with soul and soukous, Baloji has managed to create a style all his own.

An innovator in his own right, Baloji illustrates a unique interpretation of hip-hop music and music as a whole.  Combining distinct sounds and integrating culture, he is an unmistakably profound artist worthy of recognition.  His creative spirit radiates brilliantly on this album, uncovering, despite a search for cultural identity, his own musical self.
