Carter Calvert: Carter Calvert & The Roger Cohen Trio – Music Review

Not content to rest on her laurels this broadway and showbiz veteran gives a smashing performance on this her debut CD. Carter Calvert takes on Peggy Lee, Patsy Cline, Stephen Sondheim, Peter Gabriel, Rodgers and Hart, and the brilliant Willly Nelson, shining brilliantly throughout and leaving her mark on the American songbook. All throughout the set she sounds as if she is singing her heart out to you and your sitting in the front row, or better yet at the piano bar.

Her treatment of American songbook classics like Rodgers and Harts’ Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered show a contemporary treatment that honors the soul of this jewel from broadways golden age. The rhythm section supports and compliments her every nuance, climaxing with her at the key change offering a lift achieved through dynamics and not reliant simply on a modulation.

The varied selections of Jazz gems and broadway staples show off the entire range of Carters carefully honed and crafted instrument allowing her to pour herself into the music with complete abandon floating over the changes with a superb silky tone.

Highlights of this CD include the steady swingin Willy Nelson ballad Crazy made so famous by the inimitable Patsy Cline. The Roger Cohen trio acompanies Carter with the style humor and sass indicative only of trios like that of Ralph Burns or Diana Kralls.

The drama and moodiness of Send in the Clowns. and Memory are Tony award winning material. These amazing performances can only  be followed up by a deeply stirring rendition of Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherles Child.  The shuffle on Please Don’t Stop Him makes you want to hear more sass from this crazy swingin chick and almost out of the blue the tear jerking and uplifting Washing of The Water sends you off teary eyed and wanting more.
