Kenny Garrett: Seeds From The Underground – Music Review

Legendary saxophonist and Miles Davis alum Kenny Garret pays tribute on his latest offering “Seeds From The Underground” in a different way than most artists would. First of all he is playing all original tunes on his latest Mack Avenue release and he honors those that have made him who he is today bringing to light the places and things that make him Kenny Garret. Few jazz artists today make statements in the way that Kenny does. He channels everything through his creative process and makes music of a very deep and spiritually connective nature.

The opening track “Boogety Boogety” an homage to Kennys dad harbors a signature Kenny Garret melodic approach with an Oriental flavor and  the doubling of the melody by the gifted pianist Benito Gonzalez on piano.  The pace of this recording is intense and J. Mac takes you right into the thick of things with a minor mood hard bop feel that swings heavy and gives Kenny room to burn through choruses from the gate. The rhythm section gives him that Coltrane thing that every saxophonist loves to hear supporting them, it’s as if  McCoy Tyner were with him at every turn.

In many ways this latest release is almost a continuation of The Wall, with the sonic textures and to a degree the personnel used on the album, but Kenny has created a distinct sound for this record with the addition of vocals and the percussion, also the sound of vinyl cracking on Detroit, paying tribute to Kennys home town, that transports the listener and adds a visual dimension to his work.

The title track bears a singular treat for admirers of Kenny Garret, because in all of the saxophone kingdom Kennys has to be the most beautiful soprano sound.  Kenny’s unique sense of humor comes through much like Monk would have it on Du Wo Mo, and the pulsing Afro Cuban 6/8 on Laviso, I Bon? Makes the door swing off it’s hinges as Kenny and this cast of brilliant artists  leave us wondering out loud: Where to now?
