UFCW Local 400 and Head-Roc create Anthem and Music Video to support the US Labor Movement

DC-based Progressive Hip-Hop artist Head-Roc
(http://www.head-roc.com) has written an theme song (anthem) to be featured in a video produced by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 400 (UFCW Local 400). The “UFCW Local 400 Anthem” was envisioned and created to articulate the “passion and enthusiasm” current members
have for the well-respected union and to promote the virtues of union membership and assist the US Labor Movement in dealing with Corporate America.

United Food and Commercial Workers Local 400 represents about 40,000 workers in the retail food, retail, health care, law enforcement, food processing, service, and other industries in Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia, West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

In the winter of 2011, UFCW Local 400 President Tom McNutt and Head-Roc met during contracts negotiations at a union solidarity rally to oppose Mid-Atlantic Region supermarket powerhouse Giant Food’s international corporate office plans to close a processing plant in Jessup, MD, affecting over 700 DC jobs. At the rally, Head-Roc performed material from his critically acclaimed The “Empower DC” Project and was quickly paired with UFCW Local 400 Community Growth Strategies Director Diettra Lucas to bring McNutt’s idea of an anthem for one of America’s largest and more progressive unions to fruition.

“We hope this music video will draw the attention of the younger membership in a fun and innovative way while at the same time teaching them about the labor movement’s history and what being in a union is all about,” said Tom McNutt.

The “UFCW Local 400 Anthem” video was directed, filmed, and edited by UFCW Local 400 Communications & Social Media Coordinator Karlyn Williams. “The video stars Local 400 members from West Virginia, Maryland, DC, and Virginia and their families, who joined together to share their passion and enthusiasm for Local 400 and the labor movement through song and dance,” and premiered at the DC Amory this past Tuesday April 3rd during the ratification of Giant and Safeway
members collective bargaining contracts vote meeting.

The “UFCW Local 400″ Anthem” song was written by Head-Roc and produced
by Dwayne “Super Bad III” Lee and both are featured in the video. The
duo are co-founders of multiple award winning DC based Funk Rock band
GODISHEUS (http://www.godisheus.com). No stranger to writing songs
that support the US Labor Movement, the pair wrote and produced “Giant
Ain’t the G they Used to Be” for the International Brotherhood of
Teamsters in the Spring of 2011.
