Blueprint: Adventures in Counter-Culture – Music Review

At the core of Adventures in Counter-Culture is an honest approach to writing music and an impeccably developed progressive sound.  Columbus, OH native, Blueprint (Albert Shepard), is a veteran in the hip-hop industry, and has consciously used his experience to put forth an album worthy of the wait.  Seven years since his first solo album 1988, Blueprint’s sophomore album promises his usual lyrical genius, against an innovative electro/R&B sound.  He offers a unique translation of hip-hop through his renowned expertise and his freedom of speech.

Blueprint’s message is deliberate and forethought, arranged skillfully over 15 beautiful tracks. His musical versatility is exposed in songs like “Wanna Be Like You” and “Welcome Home,” where Blueprint masterfully sings R&B style solos, alongside solid rapping on tracks like “The Clouds” and “Radio-Active” that is too good to be discounted.  His latest work invites his widest audience yet, without displacing older fans of his underground accomplishments. He extends an impressive use of electronic sound, while still incorporating his expected funk-influenced beats. His powerful flow cannot be denied, with lyrics that are passionate, heartfelt and no-nonsense.

Known for his ability to go beyond traditional hip-hop, Blueprint succeeds again, coming into his own as an independent artist.  Adventures in Counter-Culture is a cohesive listen; each track representative of his pure talent and an insight into his incredible creative process.  The return of Blueprint is held in great respect and was ultimately well worth the wait.
