Bebe: Un Pokito De Rocanrol – Music Review

Spanish singer and songwriter Bebe brings us some flair and some fun on her third album, Un Pokito de Rokanrol (or, A Little Bit of Rock n’ Roll).  And the album definitely lives up to its name by delivering just a little bit of rock and roll, along with some pop, some Latin beats and guitars, and some electronic and ethnic influences from I-Don’t-Know-Where.  An album like this can seem disjointed, but really, Bebe melds all the different sounds together into something quite enjoyable and energetic.

The really nice thing about Un Pokito de Rokanrol is that the listener gets a sample of Bebe’s musical diversity.  Each song is distinct, and the album is pieced together in such a way that even though some of the songs have similar parts, they are still unique.  The entire album effortlessly holds the listener’s attention as the style and tempo change from one song to the next.  And some of the songs on the album definitely want to make you get up on the dance floor and shake your hips.

My personal favorite song on the album is ABC.  The song is tinged with a bit of rock, and sounds a little darker, a little sexier, than the rest of the songs on the album.  I’d also say that ABC is a bit more melodic the most of the album as well; it flows and it’s focused in concept.  Another much loved is Adíos because of the stark contrast in sound and tempo to the rest of the album – it slows down and almost waltzes along in soft cuteness, like Sandy from Grease singing Summer Lovin’.  It is on Adíos where you can really hear the lyrics and Bebe’s distinct Spanish accent. And just because I have a couple of favorite songs, doesn’t mean that the rest of the album is worth panning.

Overall, Un Pokito de Rokanrol is a good album that deserves a listen.  Like a good, versatile wine, the music can be paired with anything from being stuck in traffic to dancing around the house (or club) to working out.  Highly recommend.
