Ladyhawk: Shots – Music Review

Recorded over the span of two weeks in what the band calls an abandoned farm, “Shots” is Ladyhawk’s third release and seems to sound like the most identity-full for the band. With it’s definite rock base, the record swirls between honky tonk, blues and a very early 90’s sound that carries through this nine song effort. The record verges and tethers on a balance between wanting to have a grunge north western tint to it and reminding us of the Counting Crows.

The record opens with track “I don’t always know” who’s guitar solos have a country tinge that creates a melancholy overtone for the track. Later tracks such as “Fear” and “Night you’re beautiful” channel once again a rock n’ roll sound worthy of a Memphis country band without losing it’s rock fundament. In between these tracks are some that have more of a rock anthem approach with more distorted and fuzz filled guitars and more nonchalant and messy vocals. Most of the record’s tracks include guitar solos that tend to channel a less sophisticated and more spontaneous Nels Cline mixed with a touch of Green Day. The closing track “Ghost Blues”, although not at all a possible feature single off the album, is definitely the most intense track on this record. With it’s straight up blues start and driving drums and guitars, “Ghost Blues” takes the band’s instrumentation and sound beyond the walls that Ladyhawk has built for themselves with this record. The end jam, which dissipates just as cleverly as it commences, can’t be missed.

A solid effort with a few key songs which leaves us longing for music from another time.
