TRON: Legacy Reconfigured – Music Review

RIYL: The Chemical Brothers, Justice, Prodigy, Moby, Nine Inch Nails

Without question, Daft Punk received a gift from the Gods of Relevancy when they were chosen to do the soundtrack for 2010s Tron: Legacy sequel. Staying fresh and new in today’s fast paced music industry is a difficult feat for most artists, and its especially hard when you’re a 30-something French duo that never appears in public without wearing fully tinted motorcycle helmets.

While the strength of the original score should be clear to anyone who watches the film, the necessity to put out an entire album of remixes is less obvious. Still, a nice range of artists were up for the challenge, from big-name acts like the Chemical Brothers and Moby to lesser known DJs such as Paul Oakenfold and Boys Noize.

Most of the album is full-fledged dance music, ranging from Euro-disco to techno to some more obscure dance genres such as “glitch” and “fidget house”, so listeners without considerable booty-shaking stamina might want to steer clear. However, for those who like to party till the break of dawn, this album should roughly equate manna from heaven.

The best tracks on Tron: Legacy Reconfigured show up early and resurface late, but overall there are surprisingly few flat notes. The Glitch Mob version of “Derezzed” is a well-chosen opener- a growling synth line, off-kilter rhythm and lots of crackling electro-fuzz help it rise above the mindless throb of more straightforward techno.

“Fall”, redone by a tag team of the French act M83 and LA band Big Black Delta, is equally strong. Its one of the few tracks with vocals and works up a satisfying grind that recalls some of the better Nine Inch Nails electronic tracks of yore.

With a sequel to the sequel starting to slowly take shape, its worth hoping that Daft Punk are up for scoring another round of Tron. The next film certainly wouldn’t be the same without them, but its still a good bet Tron 3 will come preloaded with lots of good music and Olivia Wilde in patent leather. Even at $12 a pop, that’s a combo that’s hard to resist.
