Anna Fermanova, beautician accused of smuggling night-vision scopes from USA to Russia, is “sexy…but not a spy”, her lawyer said
The 24-year-old, who lives near Dallas, Texas, was apprehended in March while trying to board a Moscow-bound flight with “defense articles on the United States Munitions list” without permission.
Latvia-born Miss Fermanova was arrested after returning to the USA earlier this month.
She was stopped on March 1 by officials who found a Raptor night vision weapons sight and two advanced rifle sights stuffed in a pair of UGG boots.
She admits attempting to take the items to Russia but says they were intended for her Russian husband to use in hunting.
Her lawyer, Scott Palmer, told the Dallas Morning News: “She is quite sexy, you could say, but she is not a spy.”
Miss Fermanova has already attracted attention with her Facebook profile that features a number of eyecatching photographs and reveals that the 5’6” student has a trim figure and a bellybutton ring.
The Dallas Morning News said she was born in Latvia but become a US citizen after her Jewish family emigrated when she was nine years old.
It said her Facebook entry lists that she graduated from Richardson High School in 2004 and from Collin College with an associate of arts degree in 2008.
It also said state records showed she was a licensed cosmetologist who graduated in 2005 from the Ogle School of Hair Skin and Nails, a Dallas beauty school.
Mr Palmer said she is currently studying communications at the University of Phoenix but spends most of her time each year in Moscow, teaching English to students there.
She lives with her parents in the suburb of Plano, where she is currently on bail.
Her Russia-based husband is said to be involved in investment banking as well as imports and exports.
She has been compared to Anna Chapman, the attractive 28-year-old arrested in New York earlier this month accused of spying for Russia.
However, the arrest of Miss Fermanova has so far generated a less serious reaction.
One reader, commenting on the Dallas Morning News website, described Miss Fermanova’s case as “just viral marketing for a mail-order Russian bride service”.
