Recent media coverage of the massive contamination Chevron left behind in Ecuador’s rainforest region has helped the affected communities rally critical support for their cause. But now Chevron is attacking journalists for daring to explore the oil giant’s toxic legacy in the Amazon.

The oil giant has dragged Joe Berlinger, director of the award-winning film CRUDE, into court, demanding that he turn over all 600+ hours of footage shot during the making of the film. Chevron wants to scour the footage for any material that might help its relentless public relations schemes to try to discredit the plaintiffs and their attorneys who are suing for environmental clean-up.

This is another shocking chapter in Chevron’s belligerent and well-financed strategy to evade responsibility in Ecuador. And it has the added effect of sending a clear message to other journalists: “If you criticize Chevron, we’ll drag you into court.”

Please, join us in standing up against Chevron’s attack on the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment, on journalists like Joe Berlinger, and on the affected communities who Chevron is trying to silence.

HERE ARE A FEW SIMPLE WAYS YOU CAN HELP TODAY:

1. Watch CRUDE – the film that Chevron doesn’t want the world to see!

2. Spread the word about CRUDE – an explosive, critically-acclaimed David vs. Goliath story!

  • Hold your own ‘house party’ screening event
  • Share info about CRUDE on Facebook, Twitter and other social networks
  • Stay tuned and spread the word about efforts to support the filmmakers’ fight against Chevron

Every person who sees CRUDE is another viewer inspired and educated about our efforts to hold Chevron accountable, and about the frightening lengths the company will go to evade responsibility. And every CRUDE film sold, rented, or downloaded from Netflix or iTunes sends some much-needed funds to the filmmakers and their legal defense fund.

On May 6th, a U.S. district judge ruled in favor of Chevron’s demand for Berlinger’s footage. The decision was met with shock by First Amendment supporters and civil libertarians, as well as investigative journalists and documentary filmmakers, who have rallied to support Berlinger. Today, in a New York courtroom, Berlinger and his attorneys are asking for a ‘stay’ – a temporary hold – on the subpoena, while he and his team appeal (stay tuned for updates on the ChevroninEcuador.com blog).

After decades of struggling to alert the outside world to the suffering they faced at the hands of an American oil company, the indigenous people of the Ecuadorean Amazon have finally succeeded in raising the alarm through the media – radio, print, television, film, and the web.

We must not allow Chevron to silence the people of Ecuador’s Amazon rainforest by attacking those that tell their urgent stories.

PLEASE, SUPPORT CRUDE – AND THE PEOPLE WHOSE STORY IT TELLS – TODAY.
