@musicfan: No, what's appalling is that somehow the RIAA thinks that their campaign to "help the artists" carries any water when more than half of the tax they want to levy on radio stations is actually going to go to the big record labels, most of which are overseas. And when SoundExchange – the group tasked with getting artists the money – is sitting on more than $100 million of assets for “artists it can’t find.” It's easy to say "help the artists" but a lot more complicated than you make it seem. Record labels are so well aware of the value that radio stations provide them and their artists that they've been begging for airplay daily for decades. They still know that even with digital music distribution, radio is the best way to get a new artist heard and to sell albums. Why bite the hand that feeds you?

I just don't see the value in your argument, I'm sorry. The RIAA is struggling because of poor business decisions and changing economic landscape. Instead of adapting, it's swiping out the very people that make their labels money - by suing music listeners for exorbitant sums and trying to punish radio stations for promoting their music. It's bogus and insulting.

What's even more appalling is that U.S. artists don't get paid when their music is played on radio. Without this performance right, artists lose out not only on $ they deserve in the U.S. but also overseas when their music is played on international radio stations. Check out www.musicfirstcoalition.org to help support artists!
