911 call made from the car moments before the crash has been released. Our thoughts go out to the friends and family of the victims of this horrific crash.
California highway patrol officer Mark Saylor
A California highway patrol officer and three family members were killed when their loaner car’s accelerator stuck and they crashed going 100 mph. The audio of the 911 call made from the car moments before the crash has just been released.
Mark Saylor, 45; his wife, Cleofe, 45; his daughter, Mahala, 13; and his brother-in-law, Chris Lastrella, 38, were all killed in the crash. Listen to the chilling 911 call here:
Toyota is ordering its dealers this week to conduct mandatory inspections of all Lexus and Toyota vehicles after a preliminary investigation into a crash that killed four found the wrong floor mat was installed in the loaner Lexus sedan.
Investigators with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the all-weather floor mat that was found in the wreckage of the 2009 Lexus ES 350 could have interfered with the accelerator. The mat, which is made of rubber and is installed by dealers or customers as an accessory item, was a couple of inches longer than the mat that belonged in the vehicle.
What should we do if our accelerator ever gets stuck? We called our friend Mr. Traffic, a.k.a. Kenny Morse, for guidance.
“Knowing what to do in the unlikely case of a gas pedal sticking might save your life,” he says. “First of all, this happens rarely, but if you keep your wits about you and do not panic, it can make all the difference.”
Here are his top tips:
• First, try to hit the pedal to make sure nothing is forcing it down.
• Next, PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL IMMEDIATELY, and gently start to brake, being aware of the traffic around you, and pull the car to the side of the street or road as soon as possible.
• The last resort is turning off the ignition, but you have to make sure that you do not lock the steering wheel. You will lose your power in the brakes and steering. DO NOT try to drive the vehicle, as it will rev the engine to a dangerous level.
“Knowing what to do in a potential emergency is what makes a driver a driver,” Morse says. “Anyone can step on the gas and go straight, but do you know how to avoid a collision, or something like this?”

He wasn’t the one making the call. It was his passenger. I’m sure he was doing everything to stop the car.
Problem is Toyota and others have made sure you can’t do that. There is no key to mechanically turn off the car. The shifter is not connected to the transmission by any mechanical means. The computer decides if the gear shift movement is going to be translated into an actual gear change.
For those of you old enough to remember:
“I’m afraid I can’t let you do that Dave” HAL
I agree. I’m astonished that he took/wasted the time and focus to make a cell call and basically narrate his final moments. That’s the last thing he should have been doing. Put the damn thing in neutral for heaven’s sake. Get off the damn phone and get control of your vehicle.
Mark Saylor was not a dumn young man. I know as his wife’s family has stated, Mark would have done everything he could to have stopped that car. I too am a Mark Saylor family member, and all he ever wanted to do was be a Highway Patrolman, and have his family. Always, but I know that his great belief in Jesus gave him peace when this all happened in seconds. Those who want to lay blame on the driver, shame on you, if you were in same situation would you be able to do everything in a split second. Mark, always in my heart, Love you little Cousin.
