West Babylon woman, 4 kids, killed in wrong-way crash
Five members of a family returning home to Long Island from a camping trip were among the eight people killed Sunday when their minivan, traveling the wrong way on the Taconic State Parkway in Westchester, crashed head-on into a sport utility vehicle, rolled down an embankment and burst into flames.
The driver was identified by neighbors as Diane Schuler, 36, of West Babylon.
The woman and all five children – including Schuler’s daughter, 2, and her nieces, ages 5, 7 and 9 – were ejected from the van onto the median, state police said.
The lone survivor of the crash was the driver’s 5-year-old son, who was taken to Westchester County Medical Center in Valhalla with severe head trauma and other injuries, Hawthorne fire department chief Joseph La Grippo said.
New York State Police investigator James Boyle said the boy, who underwent surgery Sunday night, was in stable condition. No information on the boy’s condition was available early Monday.
Three men from Yonkers in the SUV hit by the minivan were killed, police said.
“It’s horrifying to pull up and see something like that,” La Grippo said of the accident scene. “I was at the Trade Center. This was worse.”
State Police said the family had been camping in Sullivan County and was returning home in their Ford Windstar minivan when the driver mistakenly entered the Taconic State Parkway via the Pleasantville exit ramp – a ramp for northbound traffic in Briarcliff, which is about 15 miles north of New York City.
The minivan went south into the northbound lanes and almost immediately veered across three lanes of traffic before crashing head-on into a Chevy Tracker carrying three men from Yonkers, State Police said. The Tracker then struck a third vehicle, a Chevy Trailblazer, Boyle said.
Firefighters performed CPR on the woman and children, but were able to resuscitate only the 5-year-old boy.
Boyle said police would reconstruct the accident, a process that will take months.
He said witnesses estimated the minivan’s speed at 45 mph before the crash.
“We don’t really know why she was driving the wrong way,” Boyle said, citing only “a possible medical condition.”
Police are scheduled to hold a news conference Monday at 11 a.m. regarding the crash. Police have not yet confirmed identifications of the victims.
Schuler was an employee of Cablevision, which owns Newsday. Cablevision referred all calls to law enforcement.
The three people in the first SUV – a 73-year-old man, his 49-year-old son and an 81-year-old family friend – were dead when firefighters arrived on scene, La Grippo said.
Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to pull their bodies from the crumpled vehicle.
A man and a woman from the third vehicle were hospitalized, but did not appear to be critically injured, according to La Grippo.
The minivan’s front end was obliterated, and its shell was scorched and bent.
La Grippo said he saw no skid marks – evidence of braking – on the pavement.
“I’m just real proud of my people,” La Grippo said, adding that two other fire departments assisted. “We lost lives, but we saved one.”
As for the victims, he said, “Nothing could have been done.”
