Excerpt from today’s midday briefing at the European Commission in Brussels, answering a question on the EU’s response to the coup in Honduras.
Benita Ferrero-Waldner, European Commissioner for External Relations and Neighbourhood Policy, has said on the situation in Honduras: “I regret the recent events which have taken place in Honduras. The European Commission attaches the greatest importance to the respect for the rule of law, democracy and the democratically elected institutions.
Therefore, we urge all parties involved to resolve their differences peacefully, in full respect of the country’s legal framework, and to promptly engage in a dialogue, in the interest of peace and stability in Honduras. The European Commission, which has a long history of close relations with Honduras and the Central American region as a whole, stands ready to support the country’s institutions in such a dialogue.”
