Chris Brown Community Service: Singer must do 1,400 hours - or 180 days
Chris Brown has been warned that his community service stint for assaulting former girlfriend Rihanna will be “no picnic”. The R’n'B singer must do 1,400 hours – or 180 days – of work in his native Virginia after he admitted attacking the pop star earlier this year.
Brown, 20, was also sentenced to five years’ probation after he confessed to one count of assault on the Umbrella singer. He had been facing a possible jail sentence of four years. Veteran Los Angeles defense lawyer Steven Cron told a US newspaper: “It’s easy to say he got no jail time, but serving 180 days of labour in Virginia is going to be no picnic. “I would have my own client do the 20 or 30 days in jail. With time off for good behaviour, it could be 10 or 15 days.” His sentence will involve five years of supervised probation and six months of community labour – such as removing graffiti. He will also have to attend courses on domestic violence. Brown, whose hits include With You, was questioned by police on February 8 over the attack. Police said he had been in an argument with an unidentified woman in a parked car in the Hancock Park area of Los Angeles, which spiralled out of control after they left the vehicle. After reports of the assault emerged, a photograph was posted to a US gossip website, which claimed to show Rihanna with scratches, bruises and swelling on her face. The Los Angeles Police Department launched an internal investigation to find out who leaked it.
