Automobiles slam into each other hundreds of thousands of times each year in the USA, killing over 20,000 men, women, and children. They used to kill over 50,000 each year until our government imposed crashworthiness standards, which added extra weight for door beams, heavy duty bumpers, etc. This saved many lives, but killed the 40 mpg autos available back then. People wanted to survive a car crash. SUV sales took off. Big cars became more popular. Auto mpg plummeted.

Now our President and Congress is mandating that CAFE standards have a 40 mpg average. To get 40 mpg, a car will have to be tiny and light weight. If Ford or GM still sells 20 mpg SUVs, the little cars will have to get 60 mpg to achieve the 40 mpg fleet average. Thus, our President and Congress has, in effect, condemned thousands more to death on public highways and city streets, in tiny little cars, all in the name of saving the environment.

Ironically, while these people are dying on roads, the EPA, Environmental Defense Fund, and other anti-global warming zealots identified in this article are worried about hypothetical health-related issues associated with global warming. But who ever died from global warming? When the 40 mpg standard takes effect, we'll hear about the deaths of REAL victims of global warming.

Then, will saving the environment still appeal to us, or will we want to wait until more is known about possible causes of global warming other than CO2?
